Supporting my son

My son is currently on remand waiting trial. We have had a really tricky time over the last year learning about some of the things that he has been doing, but we want to make sure that we support him through the trial so that he can get a fair process. Having family on your side can help the prisoners to have an easier time at trial and can often help the lawyers to provide the strongest possible defence in court. This blog explains how family members can help to make sure that legal process goes smoothly and that the lawyers get all of the resources that they need.

5 Things to Consider When Choosing the Right Criminal Law Attorneys

Law Blog

Taking time to choose a skilled group of criminal law attorneys is essential. While being charged with a criminal offence is stressful, taking the time to make the right decision is important. Your criminal law attorneys will represent you from interviews with police, right through a trial and during sentencing.

Putting some thought into your choice and deciding on an experienced, skilled attorney is essential. The wrong choice of criminal law attorney could have disastrous consequences. On the other hand, a competent attorney might be your saving grace in court. The following guidelines and considerations (SPACE) should be taken into account when making your decision.

Specialization

Hiring specialist criminal law attorneys could be ideal for your case. If you know what you've been charged with, try to find attorneys who have dealt with similar cases in the past. They will know the ins and outs of the applicable law, and therefore have the best chance of succeeding with your case.

Problem-Solving Skills

Some criminal law attorneys are good in court, but can't help you with basic problems like how to respond in an interview with police. Find an attorney who has practical skills that will help you with every element of the criminal process, from what to wear in court right through to advice on the legal issues. You want advice that you can implement and respond to, and an attorney who can explain the solutions to your problems.

Attitude

Sometimes, great criminal law attorneys simply don't communicate well or make you feel comfortable. Although these reasons may seem superficial and unimportant, the fact is that criminal charges can take a while to resolve. Choosing an attorney who you connect with and trust will diminish your stress levels and make sure that you feel confident in your chances throughout the process.

Connections

Australian law is full of people who know each other, and having those connections is important for effective criminal law attorneys. Connections mean that your lawyer can ask other lawyers about tricky problems and get the best result for you. Ask around and talk to lawyers that you know to figure out whether the lawyer that you're considering has a good reputation.

Experience

Consider the previous experience of the criminal law attorneys you're considering and how it could impact your case. Have they dealt with similar charges before? If so, they will be competent at handling yours. Likewise, ask them which laws they deal with the most frequently, as some offences change from state to state.
